Sony has been stealthily updating the PlayStation 3 through recent firmware updates, totally a reduction of the operating system RAM footprint from 120MB to 50MB. While this may not seem huge, with a system that only has 512MB of RAM (256MB main memory and 256MB video), opening up 70MB for game developers is a huge deal indeed.
The effects won’t be sudden, but eventually this opens up interesting possibilities for developers to load larger areas into memory, include more dynamic lighting, and more. Who know how long it’ll be before we see the results though?
